About

While these sustainability standards are essential to reflect diverse growing conditions, their sheer number creates uncertainty among retailers and consumers regarding what each standard truly represents. How are they similar, and how do they differ?

In 2023, SWR developed the Global Reference Framework (GRF) which draws on best practice not just in wine, but in other sectors like such as tea, coffee, oil palm and consumer goods. The GRF is the first global statement of what sustainability in wine entails.

Using the GRF and associated scoring matrix, we are benchmarking all of the world’s wine sustainability standards to demonstrate clearly how they align, and where they differ. This will make transparent those standards which represent a credible journey to sustainability, and those which do not.

Why it matters

Our annual benchmarking will allow transparent comparison of global sustainability standards, providing clarity about which standards demonstrate that the wines certified to them are on a credible journey to sustainability. This is important to all parts of the wine industry, including:

For Retailers:

This benchmark allows direct comparisons between different sustainability standards, improving communication with customers and buying teams.

For Growers:

Helps grape growers and winemakers understand how their chosen certifications are regarded and demonstrate their credibility.

For Standards Owners:

Provides insights on how they compare with others, highlighting their strengths and identifying gaps to address.

Our approach

Builds on Existing Knowledge
We integrate insights from established wine standards and industry bodies like OIV and FIVS, while incorporating key sustainability learnings from other sectors like palm oil, cocoa and consumer goods.

Considers the whole supply chain
Our evaluation extends beyond vineyard and winery practices, examining sustainability in packaging, logistics, and other critical stages.

Promotes collaboration
We engage in open dialogue with standards bodies, identifying areas for improvement and working together to implement changes that raise the bar for sustainability certifications globally.

The benchmarking process

SWR independently reviews each sustainability standard using the GRF and our scoring matrix. Each standard is given a score, ranking, and comprehensive analysis of its strengths and areas for improvement. Our pilot study, which reviewed the first six standards, has clearly demonstrated the effectiveness of this approach in providing valuable, constructive insights.

This benchmarking process is conducted on an annual cycle, ensuring continuous updates and evaluations that that keep pace with the evolving landscape of sustainability in the wine sector.

SWR works closely with standards organizations to identify opportunities for improvement, ensuring that sustainability certifications drive meaningful progress across the entire wine supply chain.

Looking ahead

The results of our pilot benchmarking of six sustainability standards were shared with members in October 2024, with the remaining standards to be evaluated by Spring 2025. This benchmarking process will be conducted annually, providing each standard with a score, ranking, and a comprehensive analysis of strengths and areas for improvement.

Our annual benchmarking report will be made available exclusively to members, offering invaluable insights to drive sustainability efforts across the industry
