Packaging Policy: Costs and Innovation Opportunities for Wine in the EU and UK

In this webinar, SWR brought together voices from packaging, regulatory expertise, and wine retail to examine how rapidly evolving regulation is reshaping the true cost of wine packaging. With Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), Deposit Return Schemes (DRS), and the upcoming EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) driving change, policy was shown to be a direct force shaping packaging decisions, cost structures, and innovation across the sector.

SWR Research Director Dr Peter Stanbury was joined by experts Laurel Parker (Abridge), Marcel Arsand (Ball Corporation), and Simon Mason (The Wine Society) to explore how businesses are responding to rising compliance costs, shifting material expectations, and what to expect from regulatory fragmentation across markets.

We’re developing Wine Packaging Choice Tool which will support better packaging decisions by indicating when glass is appropriate and when alternatives such as PET, bag-in-box, cans, or kegs may deliver better outcomes.
